What's hot? What's not? What tips can help us survive the not-so-luxury-friendly economy?

Stylist to the Stars, Aidyn Crowe, has graciously gave TheLuxurySpot (TLS)a sneak-peak at this seasons hottest trends.

TLS: What are the hot new trends for the fall fashion season?

AC: Rich textures including bold plaids checks and tweeds. Layered looks. Long skirts and dresses as well as long jackets. It is a season of retro and refinement, minimalism and excess. In other words…anything goes.

TLS: We all know finances can be tight- especially with the current economic situations—What pieces can be pulled out of the closet from past seasons and integrated into our chilly-weather wardrobe?

AC: I call this fiscally fashionable or eco-conscious consumerism.
Take an inventory of your closet and see what items you aren’t really wearing anymore. I like following the two-year rule.

·For higher ticket items you can either go to a local consignment store (in NYC I recommend Ina or Tokyo 7) or head to your local resale store (in NYC area I recommend Buffalo Exchange or Beacons Closet)

·If you have items you love find new ways to wear them. Know the difference between a classic and a trend. If you are still hanging onto those plaid shirts from the grunge era, good news, they are back. Pair then them with scarves and leggings or cute skirts and with sweater tights and boots.

·If you have an amazing floor length gown that is perfect but you have no place to wear it, cut it off to cocktail length. Et’ Voila you have a new party dress.

·I enjoy having clothing swaps with friends. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with friends and find hidden treasures. I try t do this a least 4 times a year. If there are items left over, simply donate them to one of the many worthwhile charities in your area.

While every Hollywood girl might be pushing their collection of Hervé Léger bandage dresses to the back of their closets, this lust-worthy trend lives on - at least in my heart - today.

Something about these super luxe Ace bandages is so appealing to the female eye.
Perhaps it's because we also are led to the assumption that this is like super sexy Spanx, a quick fix to every booty and belly blemish possible.

For girls like me, the Spring 09' collection by Max Azria didn't disappoint. From glittering ball gowns to peep-show minis and bondage-ready bikinis, all bandage fans can rest assured that Hervé will be in demand.

When not investing my loot in the numerous pairs, styles, colors, shapes (you get the idea) of shoes and coats needed for the fall season I, along with MANY luxury fans, like to give back to those who need it the most. Individuals who are fortunate enough to be able to indulge ourselves in the finer things in life can go one step further and make the WORLD of difference by being involved in Charitable Organizations.

Siobhan O'Shea, the Chairperson for Helping Other People (HOPe) happens to be one of the biggest fans of luxury goods I have ever met. With the uncanny ability to strut into her a charity fund raiser meeting the same way she would strut into a board meeting (or Saks for that matter!), she is an inspiration to us all!

I sat down with Siobhan to get to know a little more about her charity work, and what HOPe is all about:

How did HOPe come about?:
HOPe started a few years ago. It was basically born out of conversations about the developing world, by a small group of people who asked themselves what they could do to help.Our goal at HOPe is a large one—to give people the chance to escape the ongoing cycle of poverty—but it’s achieved in small steps. By providing basic health care, education and training facilities we give people a way to change their lives—and potentially the lives of the generations to follow.

What kinds of projects have you worked on?
Our projects take on all shapes and sizes. We’ve sent boys in rural Tanzania to carpentry school and set them up with tools, so when they return to their villages they are in a good position to support their families and their communities. We’ve supported a shelter that provides much needed food and medical care for women and
children with AIDS in Peru. And, I just attended the opening ceremony for a health clinic in San Pedro Sula, Honduras—a place for wellness and general health where people are forgotten.

You have such a busy life! How did your progression from Volunteer to Chairperson of HOPe come about?
When I started with HOPe, during our beginnings in 2001, I never anticipated that I’d have the honor of serving as Chairperson. You’re right – I have a busy life. We all do! But I’ve experienced our growth and I’ve seen the great work we’ve done together. That has great meaning for me and I love the work I do with HOPe.

Where & When do meetings occur?
Our monthly meetings usually take place the third Thursday of every month in the Kerry Building on McLean Avenue in Yonkers. The next meetings take place on October 16 and November 20.

Tell us about your upcoming events:
We had our first HOPe golf outing a couple of months ago and it was a great success. Our next major event is our Annual HOPe Benefit at Rosie O’Grady’s Manhattan Club on November 13 at 6:30pm. We all know that the economy stinks right now and our wallets are all getting a little bit tight. No worries I found some helpful hints on how to turn your summer makeup products into fall ones, saving you the time of shopping for new makeup and saving you money! Who doesn't love that :) Here are my favorite tips:

For Your Lips:
Don't trash your bright summer lipstick shades. Layer a darker shade with a lighter one to get pretty fall hues. Mixing brown and pinks makes rose and red and purple gives you a plum!

Want to make your lips look full and luscious?
Dabbed sparkly eye shadow in the center of your lips, the shimmer draws the light to your lips and gives the effect of fullness.

To Get Model Cheekbones:
Models always seem to have such sculpted cheeks, utilizing your bronzer can get you this look as well. Swipe your bronzer or dark powder from the summer on the hallows of your cheeks, right under the bone. This creates a shadow giving the illusion of chiseled cheekbones.

Make Your Skin Shine:Since the weather is still nice out we are not completely covering up and we still want our skin to look nice. Use a makeup primer on your legs or arms, it evens out and enhances your skin tone making you glow!

We love all sorts of baubles... everything from understated silver pieces to the flashiest chunks of gold and gemstones. It's unusual that we find a line of gorgeous, whimsical pieces though that are both American-made and won't break the bank! We recently came across SpoonFed Art's breathtaking pendants (most of which retail for about $100). Every time I watch Gossip Girl I always find myself saying "I love that headband!" Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) always seems to have the cutest headbands to match with every outfit. Now I was never really a headband type of girl but they have definitely evolved since I was in kindergarten. They have become more stylish than functional and I want to join the trend! So I went on a search to find out what type of headbands Blair wears on the show and I found a few that a few of them came from Jennifer Behr . I remember being a little girl, and playing dress up with my mother's high heels, and beautiful Halston scarves, and beautiful antique pearls. But NEVER....and I mean NEVER....was I to touch the PERFUME. This would result in my 3 middle names surfacing in the middle of my glamorous make-believe stint as a glamorous movie star in a 4 year old's body... (this didn't even happen the time I got caught in the bathtub putting my mom's blush and lipstick on my Barbies and My Little Ponies!)

My lovely mother was, and still is, a passionate and loyal lover of the House of Coco Chanel.
Which meant I most likely wouldn't walk into a house smelling of fresh baked cookies after school. ....Well, on the off chance that I did...it was usually masked by the fragrant and familiar aroma of Chanel No. 5.

Celeb Plastic Surgeon Dr. Alan Bienstock

As any normal girl would do....I turn on the TV, or flip through a magazine, and see some of the worlds most sought after celebrity faces and bodies and wonder...is that really what they look like? All perfect and perky? With no bumps on their noses and no wrinkles around their baby blue eyes?

We all wonder....what would it be like if we were a little slimmer...or a little bustier... or had a booty like J.Lo?

We decided that it's time to get down to business. What is really going on behind the velvet ropes and local anesthesia? What is happening in the world of celebrity plastic surgery?

Dr. Alan Bienstock ( shown here, with The Luxury Spot's own Stephanie, at the September 5th NY Fashion Week Launch of Ottavia et Emma) is a world-renowned Plastic Surgeon to the stars. Based here in NYC...with another office in Princeton, NJ, Dr. Bienstock has been giving the faces and bodies of celebs something to smile about. (sans smile lines..of course!)

Here is our first question for Dr. Bienstock:

We have heard about plenty of celebs getting nose jobs. Some have said it was due to a 'deviated septum'. What is this condition, and is it possible that they are just using this as a cover up?
There are celebrities who in all reality have a deviated septum, which can cause nasal obstruction, snoring, and make it difficult to breathe. A deviated septum can have an impact in the tonal quality of voices during speech and singing and can make it impossible for some individuals to breathe adequately.

However, The correction of a nasal hump or widened, bulbous nasal tip is purely a cosmetic procedure known as a Rhinoplasty . This can be incorporated with repair of a deviated septum but the cosmetic portion must be distinguished from the reconstructive. Some individuals in the media will claim that they have had a deviated septum repair when in reality they had a formal cosmetic rhinoplasty or nose job.

I'm a huge fan of lace tights, fishnets semi-classier cousin, a la Blair Waldorf.

NYLON's September featured Alexa Chung in their It Girl editorial wearing a fabulous mini Chanel frock with a pair of black floral crochet tights by super luxe legwear maker, Fogal.

Perhaps a comparable trade-off would be these lace tights (with shockingly similar patterns) from Express under $20.

It started with Prada's Spring 06' collection, spotted in a phone booth with Carrie Bradshaw, and just maybe, over-the-knee opaque and sheer hosiery has found its way into mainstream fashion this season.

At least, I hope so!

And finally, a classic staple, Wolford Satin de luxe. From Miu Miu-esque puffed out mini skirts to floaty chiffon dresses, or even under a ripped-up jeans, these tights take the cake.

There are two accessories that I absolutely cannot leave the house without: my cell phone and my iPod. I just feel lost and completely unconnected to the world without my cell phone. I love to take me iPod wherever I go so I can jam to all of my favorite tunes while I'm walking to class, sitting on the train or at the gym. I must admit that I am also very clumsy and drop my iPod about 10 times a day (oops!).

New Yorkers really love children. Last night close to $1.85 million was raised to benefit children in New York's foster care system at the 9th Annual New Yorkers For Children Fall Gala. It is comforting to know that despite of economy decidedly choking itself to death, there are stilll people who are willing to shell out $1000 minimum for a ticket to a charity event. Although this year's event did see an 8.10% decrease in total funds raised...

Patti LaBelle and Jimmy Fallon performed to the likes of (OMFG!) Blake Lively and Taylor Momson, Aerin Lauder, Beyonce and Jay-Z, Zac Posen, Julianne Moore, and Fabiola Beracasa. Fashion Week has ended and we have told you all about the some of the fabulous styles you can find for spring. But ladies even if you have all of these gorgeous clothes and accessories what good are they if you don't have an attractive well-dressed man by your side? Have no fear, I have the solution: the Perry Ellis Spring Collection.

While I do know that some of you men are in touch with your fashion sense, I know plenty of you who are not. I have realized that above all else guys like to be comfy, casual, and of course look good, right fellas? Well the spring collection from Perry Ellis brings just that, casual laid back looks that creator John Crocco describes as "democratic preppy." The fashion show was filled with pastels, soft khakis and greys, with the dominant color being what Crocco called "boy blue."The overall feel was very vacation and breezy. On top of the amazing styles, to end the show, the models took their final walk in letter-emboireded polos that spelled out Perry Ellis, so creative! It's been slowly creeping into our wardrobes for about a year now, by way of forehead-hugging headbands and floral prints. However, as Fall Fashion Week proved to be the acme of the Boho trend, I can't help but draw a parallel between the loose, flowing fabrics and the timing designers have chosen for these designs to reemerge. As Americans divide over Iraq and and trust in our country's leader wavers, the 60's and all of the political turmoil that came with that decade is easily drawn to mind.

Beads, feathers, caftans, and soft but busy prints are easily recognizable in both the current pages of Vogue and the pages of any history book. This deviance from structured looks and tight lines was most apparent at shows like Diane von Furstenberg, where models had feathers and flowers strung through their hair, even while showing a (rare) vested pantsuit.

Between a bell-sleeve mini dress and a fluid floor-length floral gown, the looks were woven with a bit more than a suggestion of the 60's. Rebecca Taylor channeled the look, adding forehead bands to each look while dotting the collection with fringed bags. (Jimmy Choo, Diane Kid Fringe Hobo, $1495, Saks)

The differences between the reemergence of this trend and the original lie in the ability to wear it. Those who indulged in these fashions in the 60's were of similar cultural beliefs, whereas today the trend has the ability to be pervasive. In other words, you can finally wear the clothes without smelling like a bong!

But it seems like lipstick is poised for a major comeback. We've never seen an American VP candidate use the word "lipstick" so many times in a campaign speech before... and it makes us wonder just how many American women are actually going to dig to the bottom of their makeup bags, cosmetic drawers, and purses to come up with their old, faithful friend: Lipstick.

I am such a huge fan of Valdemar Iodice and his amazing 'Iodice' line. Their showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC ( so sad it's over...BOO!) was truly spectacular.

TV Fashion Spotlight: VMA Style

Welcome to my first TV Fashion Spotlight(loud applause)

This week my favorite looks came from the MTV Video Music Awards which aired Sunday night (Sept. 7).

Now I may be slightly biased because I have been a dedicated Britney Spears fan for the last decade, but you have to admit she looked AMAZING! She was wearing a stunning silver Vintage Atelier Versace Dress and Jimmy Choo Heels, she had her body back and she finally won 3 Moommen!! She is making a comeback!!!!

Ahh... OK I am done raving about her and for those of you who don't have the same feelings about her as I do, I did have other fashion favorites:

Miley Cyrus:I find it amazing how she can be so glamorous even at the age of 15!

The Hills Girls- Lauren and Audrina:

Audrina looked beautiful in a gold ensemble and Lauren in a shimmery cocktail dress from her own line!!! Oh and I absolutely loved her hair!

Rihanna:She always looks fierce and is never afraid to take chances with her style. What do you think of her recent risk taking outfit?

Back to School Wish List

For me, I have always had a love-hate relationship with going back to school. Having to read over 100 pages of philosophic reasoning a night, not understanding any of it, and then having to write a 10 page paper about it, isn't exactly my idea of a good time. I would much rather be sun bathing on the beach. However there is a part of me that loves the start of a new school semester, getting to see everyone that I hadn't seen all summer,and meeting new people. But my fav part of going back is all the Back to School fashion! The end of summer is all about shopping for your new fall outfits, bags, and shoes. And who doesn't have their first day of school outfit layed out the night before?!?

Now being on a college budget I do not exactly have the funds to buy all the fun new trends for fall, especially after spending over $400 on text books :-/ But if I could buy whatever I wanted for Back to School, what would be on my wish list?

The MacBook Pro 17 in from Apple - $5,691

Now the Macs do require some getting used to, but everyone says: Once you go Mac, you never go back. I would definitely need to have all of the software features and accessories. Including the airline adaptor which allows me to hook up my laptop while I'm enroute to my dream spring break destination perhaps? And the apple remote so I can control my music or dvds from anywhere in my room.

Fashion Week....what would a girl do without it? Although many in Manhattan choose not to drive, due to the abundance of cabs and car services available, we all have the chance to envision our hair blowing in the wind in the NEWEST Mercedes-Benz models. They are displayed throughout the tents in Bryant Park at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

As if the high energy fashion shows and luxe goodie-bags weren't reason enough to jaunt through a 'park' in 4-inch heels.... the fabulous after parties are the best way to end any night.

Skincare: La Roche-Posay Saves the Day!

Although the summer is coming to a close, I felt the burning (no pun intended) desire to spread the world of La Roche-Posay. I look like a tomato, if I roast in the sun for more than 30 seconds without some sort of sunscreen! So I decided that my skin is just too precious, and that I need to find the best of the best in sun protection for this summer’s fun!

And of course, you need to be protected while beaching during the winter travel season!
Spend your holiday's slathered and protected in La Roche Posay

I did some research on this French company and found that the name 'La Roche-Posay' refers to a wee little village in France. This village has been forming ‘unique selenium-rich Thermal Spring Water’ from over 20,000 years of stable elements within flowing water, forming a complex and rare water passage. This water contains such amazing antioxidants, and has been tested to contain ‘anti-inflammatory and anti-free radical properties’ which one could use a lot of, living in New York City! was also my choice for outdoor activities ( biking/beach volleyball/running etc.) This was thick and creamy without feeling the least bit slimy and greasy. As with all sunscreens, make sure to apply this after any swimming or towel drying, but it is well worth it for all the protection you get!! The La Roche-Posay website raves that this is 'tested for children(over the age of 6 months), fragrance free' and even 'dermatologist and allergy tested' Bring this to your outdoor destination, and this is suitable and NECESSARY for the whole family to use to ward off evil sun rays.

Ceralip Lipid Replenishing Cream ($13.50 for .5 fl oz.)

helped my lips feel silky smooth and flake free- even with the sun and drinks stripping my puckers of all their moisture. Apply this as often as needed, in order to treat your lips with such ingredients as beeswax and ultra moisturizing Shea butter!

Make-Up: The PERFECT Red Lipstick

With my coloring (pale, freckles, strawberry-blonde hair, and light eyes...a 'ginger' if you will) it has always been hard for me to pull off dramatic make-up. That is until I did some research. After years of wondering if it would ever happen, and hearing all of the myths...I found the PERFECT RED LIPSTICK

For those of you who have had this problem, I know you’re out there ....Start by following some of these tips:

Know your skin-tone, and which red works best for you

If your skin has pink undertones, you can go with more cool and blue-ish 'true' reds Having more yellow undertones should lead you towards warmer brownish reds. Think of these stars have been seen sporting red lips, when defining your skin tone.

Fair skin: Think Scarlett Johansson, Gwen Stefani and Leighton Meister

Medium Skin: Think Jessica Alba and Jennifer Lopez

Dark Skin: Think Halle Berry and Beyoncè Knowles

Dramatic or Demure?
While some women can pull off a matte, dramatic red lip every day, adding a touch of gloss, or simply going with a creamy lipstick can give you a more subtle look . If you see someone on the street who has the kind of look you are going for (and they're not sprinting to catch a train in 4 inch heels)....be daring and ask them what they're wearing! The search for red-lipstick is usually grueling, and many women are glad help the cause. Plus, who doesn’t love a compliment?

Exfoliate! Red Lipstick will highlight any dry or chapped skin you may have on your lips....yuck!!! Want your lips to be soft and sweet enough to kiss?

Here is Ashley’s fool-proof lip exfoliation recipe:

Mix a dime sized drop of cool petroleum jelly with some coarse sugar, rub this on your lips with your finger for 15-20 seconds, and wipe off with a soft tissue or cotton ball and voila! (Make sure to moisturize well, to keep your lips looking fabulous!)

Underwear for lips

We all (well hopefully some of us!) wear underwear under our clothing. This gives us a good base, and makes us feel somewhat secure if our shirt somehow comes off! Why not have this principle for your lips? The worst nightmare for a lipstick wearer, is having your lipstick wear off, exposing a naked lip. Some ladies use a lighter application of concealer or foundation as a base for their lipstick. I always use a nude lip-liner the same color as my lips. This leaves me looking ‘clothed’ even if some of my red has rubbed off! I usually apply once before applying my first coat. Read below about my Yves Saint Laurent liner—it stays all day!

Bring a friend
Your favorite make-up counter will have skilled employees who can lead you down the path to success by offering you choices in your color family (warm or cool, blues or reds etc). If they are busy, however, they may not be able to stick around and give you opinions. It is always helpful to invite a friend with you who will give you an honest opinion. Ask your friend to lunch and work up an appetite while shopping for lipstick.

Test: When you begin your quest, start at your favorite make-up counter ( I go straight for Chanel, obviouslyyy), and have their representative give you the low-down on their return policy. Then, ask them if they have any lip-stick or promo samples to try. This will allow you to bring them home and test them out. They also can supply you with disposable lip brushes to paint your lips without getting the cooties, and make-up remover to give your lips a clean palette. Also, give yourself some time to wander to a couple of counters, to give yourself some options.

LipStick: Chanel Rouge Hydrabase Crème Lipstick in Fire ($27.00) Ugh…perfection. Chanel does it again! They have formulated their lipstick to include Vitamin E and other skin soothers. This helps to keep lips healthy all day (that’s how long it lasts!)

When you finally think you've got your match:

Feast of San Gennaro:
This 11-day celebration makes everyone who has taste-buds want to be Italian, or at least celebrate with friends and family. The festival marks the feast day of the patron saint of Naples, San Gennaro. And believe me…New York feasts, while celebrating the strong Italian roots and culture in Little Italy. And while I am as Irish as a drunken clover, the Feast of San Gennaro had become a yearly jaunt down to Little Italy that makes me want to be an Italian (and tan) woman that can actually cook! (I still think cereal should count)

The Weather:
New York is HOT in the summer and COLD in the winter....and Fall in NYC gives us that in-between weather that our closets (and feet) adore! This is the perfect weather for shopping!! Some of my favorite pieces of clothing start coming alive again in the fall, teasing us in the storefront windows before the weather has changed. Grandpa Cardigans? Dark wash Skinny Jeans paired with a brand new pair of Leather Boots? CASHMERE PASHMINAS!?! Can you say luxury?! They all go perfectly with a stroll through Central Park with a friend, comparing notes on new fall trends, and what your new fall perfume is going to be.

*Side Note* crisp cool air is always, I mean ALWAYS better for your hair! Wear your locks down, long, loose and natural, while waving summer frizz good-bye!

Of course I had to save the best for last....drum roll please.......

After months of grueling work, design houses such as Valentino, Carolina Herrera, Marc Jacobs, Max Azria and more, unveil their collections under the tents in Bryant Park. The world's most beautiful models strut these collections down the runway while the fashion's finest critics, celebrities and customers come to watch... in between lavish soirées and updating their shopping lists.

As if this wasn't reason enough to attend.... This year marks the 70th Anniversary of one of my fav movies...The Wizard of Oz!
And with that....designers Oscar de la Renta, Stuart Weitzman, Gwen Stefani (L.A.M.B), Jimmy Choo, Giuseppe Zanotti, Besty Johnson, A Testoni, Alberta Ferretti, Botkier, Abaete, Tibi, Diane von Furstenburg, Manolo Blahnick, Lisa Pliner, Moschino, Roger Vivier, Sergio Rossi & Tuleh ALL have created their own modern version of Dorothy's famed red slipper. Each is adorned by countless Swarovski Crystals and displayed encased in glass around the magnificent main fountain with in the tents. What a great idea!

TV: Forget the drama, I love the fashion

While I love college, I hate my Monday night class because it completely interferes with my TV line up for the evening! I always miss Gossip Girl and the begining of The Hills. But thank my lucky stars for DVR!!! I have it preset to record all the episodes of both shows so I can watch them later in the week :) Since I love the fashion on Gossip Girl, The Hills, and on the new series of 90210, every week I will be posting my favorite look of the week and most likely the look will be coming from one of those three shows.
I love the New York style of Gossip Girl which stars my fav actress of the moment, Blake Lively. And who does not love the style of the girls on the Hills?! There is a look for everyone, Audrina is very rocker, Whitney is more bohemian, and Lauren and Lo have a simple classic style. 90210 just premired its first episode, a new chapter of the popular 90s series. The show is going to be filled with drama and of course some great fashion!
